Evergreen tree, 3-5 m tall, branches spreading. Thorns 2-3 mm long. Young branches flat, angular, ridged, pubescent, green or purplish. Leaves alternate; petiole 2.5-4 cm x 1.3-2.5 cm, broad winged, obcordate, pubescent beneath, articulated with leaf blade; leaf blade 10-15 cm x 5-8 cm, ovate-oblong or ovate-elliptic, margin undulate-crenulate, apex subacute to obtuse, emarginate, base rounded to obtuse, midrib and veins pubescent beneath. Flowers solitary axillary or in few-flowered racemes, racemes occasionally caulicolous, peduncles and pedicels pubescent, pedicels articulated. Flowers large, ca. 4 cm across, white, bisexual. Calyx cupulate, ca. 5 mm x 15 mm, gland-dotted, lobes 3-5, minute. Petals usually 5, free, white, ca. 2.5 cm x 1 cm, oblong. Stamens 35-40; filaments polyadelphous, 9-10 mm long; anthers ca. 4 mm long, linear-oblong, dehiscence longitudinal. Ovary ca. 7-8 mm x 6-8 mm, obovate, puberulent, multilocular (up to 20), with broad central axis, puberulent; style ca. 10 mm long, puberulent in lower half; stigma capitate, ca. 7 mm diameter. Fruit large, pale- yellow, globose, oblate, pyriform or broadly obconic, 6-8 cm x 9-12 cm, pericarp thick, ca. 2 cm, spongy, with large prominent oil ducts, pulp vesicles lax and distinct; acidic or slightly bitter. Fruit with many (up to 200) or no seeds; seeds irregularly shaped, ridged.
